OFFICIAL QUESTION:

Forensic Science Geek of the Week Challenge
Forensic Science Geek of the Week Challenge

1. What is in this picture?

2. What does it do?

Our Geek of the Week answered:

It is a gas Chromatograph with samples on the autosampler. Oh, and it samples the ethanol molecules found in the headspace of the samples being tested.

[BLOGGER’S NOTE: A very honorable mention goes to two others who answered after Attorney Arata.

Chuck Ramsay, Esquire wrote:

That is a headspace autosampler. It automatically feeds samples into a gas chromatograph for analysis without the need for a technician to manually insert individual samples. “Headspace” sampling is analysis of the air above the liquid sample. The two are in equilibrium [there is a partition ratio that allows the measurement of the gaseous phase to relate to the liquid phase].

Kim Keheley Frye, Esquire wrote:

Auto sampler for headspace vials for testing on a gas chromatography. This auto sampler can be programed to inject samples in the gc in a prepared order. You didn’t ask, but technicians still place the vials and program the auto sampler which can lead to validity issues due to human error. Can’t discern the injection technique, but cross contamination of the samples also has to accounted for and prevented to obtain valid results.

Thank you all for participating. Check out next week’s contest soon.]
